Dear Partners and Friends,

Over the past quarter, I had the privilege of representing Volunteer Florida at several impactful events across the state—each one reinforcing the power of service, collaboration, and community. From keynote speaking engagements and panel discussions to AmeriCorps trainings, graduations, and volunteer recognition ceremonies, it has truly been an energizing few months.

These opportunities to uplift service, celebrate impact, and strengthen partnerships continue to inspire our work. Volunteer Florida remains deeply committed to our mission to #ServeFL, supporting communities statewide through service.

Florida Volunteer Month

April was National Volunteer Month, a time when we recognize those who dedicate their time and energy to volunteering. Volunteer Florida not only appreciates these contributions but also spreads awareness and encourages more people to get involved in their communities.

Throughout April, I participated in two service projects in honor of Volunteer Month. By expressing our sincere appreciation to every volunteer, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a culture of volunteerism and providing meaningful opportunities for service and engagement. While we celebrated Volunteer Month in April, our gratitude extends throughout the year as we thank our dedicated volunteers for their extraordinary contributions, helping to build a brighter future for all.

Governor DeSantis issued a formal proclamation recognizing April as Volunteer Month in Florida, further underscoring the importance of volunteerism and community engagement across the state.

The proclamation can be found here.

Seventh Annual DJJ Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony

I attended the 7th annual Florida Department of Juvenile Justice’s Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony, where I delivered remarks recognizing the outstanding contributions of volunteers dedicated to supporting Florida’s youth. During the ceremony, I expressed deep gratitude for the volunteers’ commitment to helping young people overcome challenges and building brighter futures. I also highlighted the vital role that service plays in strengthening our communities and emphasized the positive impact volunteers have on the lives of youth and their families.

Best and Brightest Award

I had the honor of presenting Volunteer Florida’s Excellence in Volunteerism Award at the 20th Annual Best & Brightest Awards Ceremony. Now in its twentieth year, this annual event celebrates high school seniors in Leon County who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, service, and community engagement. Over the years, the Best & Brightest Awards have recognized nearly 2,000 exceptional students and awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships, fostering a lifelong commitment to service and leadership in our youth.

Congratulations to Darius Jones II, an exceptional senior at Rickards High School! As President of both his school and National Honor Society chapter, a multi‑sport athlete, mentor, tutor, and active community leader, Darius truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism and leadership. I wish Darius—and all the outstanding students recognized for their excellence—the very best in their next chapter.

Verizon Disaster Resiliency Initiative Fireside Chat

In June, I had the opportunity to participate in a fireside chat with Verizon in Tampa as part of the launch of their new Disaster Resilience Initiative. This event brought together United Way, United Way Suncoast, Habitat for Humanity, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, and other leaders, all united in our mission to better prepare Florida for the next storm.

During our conversation, I shared how Volunteer Florida and our partners are building more resilient communities through service and collaboration. It was inspiring to connect with others who are equally committed to supporting Floridians in times of need and working together to strengthen preparedness and community awareness.

VF Annual Meeting Service Project

In June, during our annual board meeting in Sandestin, the Volunteer Florida Foundation Chair, Commissioners, and staff came together for a special service project with Food for Thought. Together, we packed 100 bags filled with healthy, easy-to-prepare food items for children experiencing food insecurity in Walton and Okaloosa counties. These bags will help ensure local students have consistent access to nutritious meals throughout the school year and summer.

Food for Thought is a vital resource for children and families across the Florida Panhandle, and we were proud to support their mission. This hands-on project exemplifies Volunteer Florida’s ongoing commitment to strengthening communities—one act of service at a time.
