Volunteer Florida is proud to showcase Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County, a Volunteer Florida grantee. Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County serves pre-K through 3rd grade students in the St. Lucie County area, providing on one-on-one and group tutoring in reading comprehension. During “reading block” school hours, students meet with AmeriCorps members three times a week for a minimum of three months to increase sight word recognition and literacy skills. In 2015, AmeriCorps members engaged 225 pre-K through 3rd grade students from low-income neighborhoods and provided over 160 hours of tutoring. AmeriCorps members also recruited 80 community volunteers to build the capacity of several local low-performing schools. 100% of students engaged in one-on-one or group tutoring led by AmeriCorps members increased their sight word recognition and academic performance in literacy, demonstrating the reading skills necessary to move to the next grade. Amazing work, Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie County!
