Sarah “Sam” Seevers is a long-time resident of Destin and a highly active citizen. In 2002 she was elected to the Destin City Council and subsequently was elected the First Female Mayor of Destin in 2010 serving 4 years. She returned as an interim Mayor in 2016. Currently, Sam serves as Chair of the Commission on Community Service (Volunteer Florida) and was appointed in 2015 by Governor Scott to the Commission on Healthcare and Hospital Funding. She is the Chairman of the Okaloosa County RESTORE Advisory Committee. Since 2004, Sam is the Owner/Editor of Life’s A Beach Publications, LLC in Destin Florida.

Sam completed the Institute of Elected Municipal Officials Training as well as the Advanced Elected Municipal Officials Training, an intensive academic program offering a comprehensive overview of Florida municipal government. Shortly after, she implemented the “Sam Hayes Scholarship” program, Northwest Florida’s first scholarship program that allows elected officials from cities that cannot afford the tuition to attend the Institute of Municipal Officials Training.

During her time on the city council, she has served as chair for the city’s Community Redevelopment Agencies, President of the Northwest Florida League of Cities, and an executive board member for the Florida League of Cities. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Florida League of Mayors and served as the President of the Okaloosa County League of Cities.

She was appointed by Governor Crist to the Florida State Governors’ Oil Spill Task Force after the 2010 BP Oil Spill. She has served on boards for the Destin Chamber of Commerce, Destin Rotary Club, Board of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, the Tourist Development Council, the Destin History and Fishing Museum and the American Cancer Society. She has also served as a Commissioner on the Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Women. Sam also was a Take Stock in Children Mentor for 7 years mentoring the same student throughout that time.

In 2009, Sam was chosen to attend the 56th Annual National Security Forum through Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Sam has served as Honorary Commander for the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron on Eglin Air Force Base and was appointed in 2012 to the Community Leaders Program through Eglin Air Force Base.

Sam has been the recipient of “Destin Council Member of the Year” award, the “Ann Gibson Community Service Award,” “Destin Rotarian of the Year” award and Destin Area Chamber “Volunteer of the Year” award. She was honored by the Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Women as an inductee for the 2013 Okaloosa County Women’s Hall of Fame for her work throughout Okaloosa County. In 2014 she received the “Hometown Hero Award”.

Sam is married to Rick Seevers and they have two children, Michael and Devin.
