Michael J. (Mike) McLeod is Dean Emeritus of South Florida State College, from which he recently retired after 18 years of service. Born and raised in the dockland projects of South Wales, Mike taught elementary, middle, and high school in England for several years. During this time he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). In 1982, he was recruited by the Cayman Islands Government to oversee specific aspects of Mathematics curriculum and jump-start the islands’ adult education program. Mike also initiated the math and English programs at the islands’ correctional facility.
Dr. McLeod arrived in Florida in 1988 and has received many awards and recognition for his involvement in various charities, boards, and community projects ranging from Junior Achievement and Take Stock in Children, to the Salvation Army and Knights of Columbus. Mike is the immediate past-president of the Highlands County Education Foundation and has been the chair of Leadership Highlands since 2006. He presided over the Sebring Chamber of Commerce for the city’s centennial year and is a proud RSVP volunteer and active member of the Florida Association of Volunteer and Resource Management (FAVRM).
Having acquired citizenship, Mike joined the United States Army Reserve and was activated for Operation Desert Shield/Storm/Farewell, spending considerable time in the Middle East (1989-90). He is a graduate of the US Army personnel, finance and quartermaster schools.
