Welcome to 6 Days 6 Ramps!
2009 6 Days 6 Ramps Dates
May 8-10 and May 15-17, 2009
6 Days 6 Ramps is a multi-site collaborative service project between the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, commonly called Volunteer Florida; not-for-profit organizations; organizations that serve persons with disabilities; volunteer centers; faith-based organizations; AmeriCorps programs and the business community.
6 Days 6 Ramps began as a joint project between Volunteer Florida and AmeriCorps Florida State Parks. The project, originally known as the St. Andrews Inclusion Project, evolved from a single event community service project to a yearly six-day, multi-site community strengthening event.
One of the goals of 6 Days 6 Ramps is to encourage people with disabilities to join AmeriCorps. For this reason 6 Days 6 Ramps occurs each year in conjunction with National AmeriCorps Week. National AmeriCorps Week shines a light on the work AmeriCorps members are doing across America, and is observed to encourage more Americans to serve their communities. In 2009, National AmeriCorps Week will be celebrated May 9 - 16. We strongly encourage
6 Days 6 Ramps applicants to partner with AmeriCorps State or National Directs, AmeriCorps*VISTA, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America national service programs throughout Florida, as well as organizations serving persons with disabilities.
6 Days 6 Ramps seeks to achieve the following goals
- Exemplify and expand the role of persons with disabilities in improving their community through participation in national service programs and community volunteering.
- Bring attention to the need for access for persons with disabilities through barrier removal so that persons with disabilities can remain independent and a part of their communities.
- Help strengthen existing volunteer efforts to remove barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from participating in their community by building wheelchair ramps for local residents with disabilities whose income will not support the cost of building a wheelchair ramp.
