The first Governor’s Celebration of Volunteerism, held at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center on April 14, was a great success, with celebrity speakers, entertainment and more than 125 people in attendance! The purpose of the Celebration, which was held in conjunction with the 5th Annual Florida Volunteer Month observance, was to recognize and honor the successes of Florida's many volunteers, and to support the efforts of the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service to engage volunteers to address the many needs in our state.
Attendees at the Governor’s Celebration of Volunteerism were treated to a wonderful evening of food, entertainment and inspirational speakers. The celebration began with a rousing drum performance by Line150, a drum corps comprised of youth, volunteer mentored by men of faith.
Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp provided opening remarks and an invocation, and then introduced Tom Kuntz, of SunTrust Banks, who presented a check for $100,000 to Governor Charlie Crist for the Governor’s Fitness Challenge. Governor Crist then spoke, and presented a corporate Governor’s Points of Light award to Klay Fennell, Regional Vice President of Comcast, for the company’s outstanding philanthropic service to the people of Florida.
But the evening was just getting started! After a wonderful dinner and dessert, guest speakers Brad Meltzer, seven-time New York Times best-selling author, and Nat Moore, of the NFL Miami Dolphins — both noted philanthropists — gave inspirational and entertaining speeches about the importance of service to others.
The Governor’s Celebration of Volunteerism was coordinated by the Volunteer Florida Foundation and the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
