On May 22, Volunteer Florida CEO Wendy Spencer proudly presented two President’s Volunteer Service Awards to two special volunteers! The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation on behalf of the President of the United States to recognize the best in the American spirit, and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service. The Award is given to individuals, families, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding civic participation over the course of a 12-month period.
Gold Award: Chuck Smith
Chuck Smith has not let the grass grow under his feet since his retirement from Abbot Laboratories. Chuck has volunteered a full day at the Volunteer Florida offices every Thursday since December of 2003! Chuck also is an avid Habitat for Humanity volunteer.
Chuck is Volunteer Florida’s utility infielder, and staff always can count on him to pitch in wherever he is needed. Whether assembling office furniture; organizing storage rooms; collating, assembling and binding reports; or fixing a break room cabinet, Chuck’s efforts help to ensure Volunteer Florida’s offices to run smoothly and efficiently. He has become a treasured member of the Volunteer Florida family!
During 2005, Chuck logged a total of 584 volunteer hours, both working for Volunteer Florida and pounding nails for Habitat for Humanity, earning him a Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award!
Bronze Award: Jeremiah Fisher
Jeremiah Fisher spends his days as the Assistant Registrar for Graduation at Florida State University. In spite of his demanding job, during hurricane activations, he can be found working at the State’s Emergency Operations Center on weekends, updating information on volunteerfloridadisaster.org, answering telephones, and doing research to assist staff in getting relief supplies where they are needed most.
During the 2005 Hurricane Season, Jeremiah logged more than 60 weekend hours at the Emergency Operations Center during both the Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Wilma activations. He clocked a total of 101.25 volunteer hours for the year, earning him a Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award!
Both Chuck and Jeremiah also volunteered to staff the Florida AmeriCorps and National Service Conference, held in Orlando in May of 2005. Chuck showed his characteristic versatility, tackling tasks from assembling trade show displays to manning a video camera during conference sessions. Jeremiah directed the conference’s live productions – including cameras, lights and sound – for all the conference’s plenary sessions.
Congratulations to our wonderful volunteers!
