AmeriCorps Dignity Project Presents New Home

diginity projectThe AmeriCorps Dignity Project just turned over the keys to George and Ethereen Polite’s new home! Two eight-person teams of AmeriCorps members earned a total of 8,076 volunteer hours working on the structure. The home was constructed in two halves at Dignity’s campus and was presented to the new owners during a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on August 9th.

In addition to AmeriCorps members, others were involved in this affordable housing project, including the City of Gainesville’s Department of Community Development, New South Federal Savings Bank, Gainesville Regional Utilities, and various construction firms.

The design of the 1,200 sq. ft. modular home was based on house plans created by Dignity Project board member Tom Spain of Spain & Cooper Construction, a leading area homebuilder. The home incorporates enhanced energy efficiency features, including positioning of the air conditioning ducts below the insulation in the attic to reduce energy used when warming and cooling the home.

While the modular home marks the end of the construction-training program at The Dignity Project, it signals the start of a new life for the Polites. The Dignity Project will continue to provide training opportunities and community service activities through its Auto, Computer and After School Programs.
