A program of the Corporation for National & Community Service.
This summer, President Obama is calling on all of us – young and old, from every background, all across this country – to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal by serving in our communities. From June 22 to September 11, "United We Serve" will begin to engage Americans from coast to coast in addressing community needs in education, health care, energy independence, economic renewal, and other issues. With the knowledge that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when given the proper tools, President Obama is asking us to come together to help lay a new foundation for growth. This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects. "United We Serve" is an initial 81 days of service but will grow into a sustained, collaborative and focused effort to promote service as a way of life for all Americans.
Visit Serve.gov to see how you can answer the President's call to serve our communities!

2009 Able Trust Ability Awards Ceremony in Tallahassee.>>
On June 12, 2009, Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp awarded Paul Martell, Accessibility Program Manager for Volunteer Florida, as “Public Employee of the Year” during the 2009 Able Trust Ability Awards Ceremony in Tallahassee. The Able Trust Ability Awards honor businesses and individuals from around the state for their employment, leadership, and service to Florida’s citizens with disabilities. Martell has been working on projects in cooperation with The Able Trust for the past 11 years including Project Impact, a program that enables high school and college students with disabilities to learn and develop valuable leadership skills through serving their community.
Martell’s ultimate goal is to achieve full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in volunteerism and service. He works year round promoting and recruiting persons with disabilities to serve in AmeriCorps and addresses each individual’s employment opportunities, trains members and program directors, and assists in providing accommodations for members with disabilities. Most important, he guides members so that they can make a contribution to the community that suits their individual talents, interests and availability.
“I wholeheartedly believe that everyone can give back to their community,” says Martell. “And each day I encourage EVERYONE in communities to serve.”
Reimbursements for social services related to Hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma
Partnering with the Florida Department of Children & Families, Volunteer Florida is excited again to offer a NEW opportunity under this Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) program!
This new opportunity allows non-government organizations reimbursement for social services that were provided to survivors of the 2005 Hurricanes – Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Eligible expenses are from the time of the disaster through June 30, 2009.
Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) Information Packet (PDF, 76KB)
Estimation Report Form (XLS, 84KB)
Modeling the process of the previous SSBG opportunity offered earlier this spring, we are seeking estimates from qualified non-government organizations at this time. The report we are requesting is merely your estimation of funds your organization may seek to have reimbursed; it is not a grant application. Your response is greatly appreciated as Volunteer Florida will work with the Florida Department of Children & Families to effectively plan the distribution of these funds. The deadline for submission of the estimation report is Thursday, June 18, 2009.
Volunteer Florida will host an informational conference call on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 2:00 ET. To access this call, please e-mail with your name and organization.
Governor Charlie Crist speaks about the importance of volunteering in your community.>>
The first Governor’s Celebration of Volunteerism, held at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center on April 14, was a great success, with celebrity speakers, entertainment and more than 125 people in attendance! The purpose of the Celebration, which was held in conjunction with the 5th Annual Florida Volunteer Month observance, was to recognize and honor the successes of our many volunteers across Florida, and to support the efforts of the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service to engage volunteers to address the many needs in our state.
