AmeriCorps members across Florida begin a year of sacrifice and service in AmeriCorps!

Jacksonville Swearing In Ceremony This October, more than 600 AmeriCorps members statewide attended ceremonies in Jacksonville, Lakeland and Miami to take the AmeriCorps Pledge and begin their year of intensive service and sacrifice for Florida’s communities!  The Jacksonville North Florida Launch and the Miami South Florida Launch both were held October 22, and the Central Florida Launch in Lakeland was held October 23.  In addition to the swearing-in ceremonies, AmeriCorps members listened to motivational speakers, and participated in team building exercises and valuable training opportunities designed to enhance their service experience and to help them prepare for life after AmeriCorps.

StoryCorps Announces the Second Annual Day of ListeningNational Day of Listening

Acclaimed oral history project stresses stories of service in 2009 commemoration.

StoryCorps, the most ambitious oral history project ever undertaken, has announced the second annual National Day of Listening, to take place on November 27, 2009. The National Day of Listening is an effort to encourage all Americans to honor a friend, a loved one, or a member of their community by interviewing them about their lives. The interview process takes less than an hour and offers a meaningful alternative to holiday consumerism.

Participants are encouraged to record their National Day of Listening interviews using equipment that is readily available in most homes – from cell phones to tape recorders to computers or even pen and paper. StoryCorps has created a free Do-It-Yourself interview guide with equipment recommendations and interview instructions available online at nationaldayoflistening.org.

The Florida Medical Reserve Corps Network Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers

The Florida Medical Reserve Corps Network is comprised of both medical and non-medical volunteers that help augment Florida's First Responders during disasters. They want to make a real difference in the lives of all Floridians!

Local Coordinators for the Medical Reserve Corps make sure that all volunteers are properly screened and trained and have the necessary equipment to help disaster survivors.

Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers assist by staffing Points of Dispensing and Points of Distribution, educating Floridians and improving health literacy on public health issues, helping at community health and non-emergency events, and supplementing public health preparedness and response. They are also very involved in H1N1 planning and implementation, data gathering, and training and exercises with local responders and other public health partners.www.servfl.com
