$500 Grant to be Awarded for Submission of Exemplary Practices!Better Communities Include Everyone

Organizations submitting Better Communities Include Everyone Questionnaires that are judged exemplary will be awarded a grant of $500 to support their efforts to include persons with disabilities in volunteer and national service opportunities.  Two grants will be awarded: One award will be provided to an organization that primarily serves persons with disabilities. A second award will go to an organization with a primary mission to provide services that do not have a disability focus.

Organizations awarded the $500 grant will have until December 31, 2010 to submit reimbursable expenses related to supporting volunteer experiences for persons with disabilities.

Examples of Reimbursable Expenses for Organizations Serving Persons with Disabilities

Expenses should be related to:

  • Recognizing non-disability organizations for their efforts to include persons with disabilities as volunteers;
  • Educating non-disability partners or potential partners on including volunteers with disabilities;
  • Reaching out to organizations on including persons with disabilities in volunteer opportunities;
  • Supporting projects developed to increase the participation of persons with disabilities as volunteers in the community.

Examples of Reimbursable Expenses for Organizations that do not Serve Persons with Disabilities

Expenses should be related to:

  • Purchasing equipment that supports communicating with persons with disabilities;
  • Developing marketing materials in alternative formats to reach out to persons with disabilities to volunteer;
  • Making the organization’s site more accessible;
  • Training staff on including volunteers with disabilities.
