George R. Guthrie

george gutherieGeorge Guthrie retired from Verizon/GTE on July 30, 2004 after 33 years as a Facility Maintainer. He has been a member of IBEW Local 824 since 1971, and has served as a Chief Union Steward, delegate and Executive Board member to the West Central Florida Federation of Labor, and COPE Chair for Pinellas County. The WCFFL selected him to serve as AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison with the United Way of Tampa Bay starting August 9, 2004.  He currently serves as Director, Labor Participation, AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison for the United Way of Tampa Bay. 

Mr. Guthrie has worked on every United Way campaign since 1970. During two of the United Way campaigns, Guthrie served as Labor Loaned Executive in Hillsborough County and was on the board of the Pinellas County United Way. In addition Guthrie served as Labor Chair on the Campaign Cabinet for Hillsborough and Tampa Bay United Ways. Mr. Guthrie is due to begin his second five-year term as Labor Representative to the Pinellas Opportunity Council.

Mr. Guthrie was appointed to the Commission by Governor Jeb Bush on September 17, 2002.
