and experiences. While teaching, participants live in small communities of 4-7
members and together share the many challenges and rewards of beginning teaching.
ACE participants are encouraged to develop their own personal spirituality in
the context of community, and to share with one another the journey of becoming

The program recruits recent college graduates and young professionals to serve two-year terms as public school teachers in our city’s most underserved schools. The intent of the program is to close the achievement gap in the city of Jacksonville and give every child the opportunity to attain an excellent education. We do this by placing crucially needed, highly-qualified teachers in schools with significant numbers of at-risk students. Members are paid by the school district and receive a financial education award upon successful completion of service.

AmeriCorps Financial Support Services is a National Direct AmeriCorps program based in Wichita, Kansas at the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation. The program operates in six cities, Boston, MA; Denver, CO; Lansing, MI; Pensacola, FL; Seattle, WA; and Wichita, KS and has five AmeriCorps members serving at each site. The program provides financial support services to low income workers, many with disabilities. Our goal is to assist these individuals and families to move toward financial self-sufficiency by providing elements of disability benefits counseling, income tax assistance, and assistance with personal financial tasks such as budgeting and obtaining financial services.

AmeriCorps members address the critical education needs of Hillsborough County public elementary schools by serving as one-on-one literacy tutors and academic mentors for primary struggling readers, encouraging students to complete their year at grade level. Some members also recruit, train and support a group of community and student volunteers to serve as school-based reading tutors in elementary sites throughout the District, establishing a volunteer base of effective and well-trained volunteers. AmeriCorps members do a variety of after-school programs such as PALS (Peers
Assisting Learning in Schools) and other service learning projects in the Indian
River County. Weekend projects that our AmeriCorps members are involved with
include Habitat for Humanity, working with the elderly, environmental projects
in the community as well as community based events. We collaborate with 50 different
agencies and complete over 200 service projects in the calendar year providing
12,000 hours of volunteer service to our teen participants.

Campus staff meet regularly with Bonner AmeriCorps Members to facilitate their development as team leaders, assist in reflection and assessment, and equip them to serve as a point of contact for faculty and students who might become engaged through a service-learning or community based research course.

AmeriCorps members improve natural resources in state parks and other public lands throughout the State of Florida by removing exotic plants, reintroducing native species, surveying for endangered animals and plants, improving beaches and rivers, conducting controlled burns, and maintaining trails. Members also conduct environmental education and interpretive programs for communities to foster awareness and develop a greater appreciation for the environment. The program also has a community involvement and volunteer development component.
