AmeriCorps members do a variety of after-school programs such as PALS (Peers
Assisting Learning in Schools) and other service learning projects in the Indian
River County. Weekend projects that our AmeriCorps members are involved with

As one of eight sites for this national project administered by the University
of Maryland – Center of Aging, the Department of Elder Affairs, in partnership with the Easter Seals Miami-Dade, provides respite to low-income elders suffering from Alzheimer’s
or other related disorders at risk of institutionalization, alleviating the burden
and stress of their caregivers, allowing elders to remain in a home, adult day
care, and related settings in their communities. Members also help increase awareness

The Arab-American
Resource Corps (ARC) a branch of the AmeriCorps program works to strengthen Arab
Americans’ capacity
to access the services the need to become self-sufficient and empowered participants
in American civil society. ARC members will play a key role in supporting the
growth and development of Arab-American community-based organizations and promoting
community service in both Arab and non-Arab communities. Through this spirit
of volunteerism, ARC will also build bridges between various communities, creating
a space for dialogue and understanding through direct service, outreach activities
and collaboration. ARC will give a diverse group of members a chance to develop
their skills in community-building and service, creating a national team working
together to meet a common mission.

Literacy* AmeriCorps members provide tutoring and literacy instruction for children,
youth and adults in schools, community based organizations and at family
literacy centers throughout Palm Beach County. Some of the opportunities for
service include teaching in family literacy programs serving newly immigrated
learners, tutoring and mentoring at risk teenagers in a specialized vocational
school, providing early literacy enrichment to migrant farmworker’s preschool
children, teaching adults in basic education, computers skills and GED preparation
classes, and tutoring children in elementary schools and after school programs.

Members provide relief or assistance through intervention and prevention services
to caregivers in Palm Beach County. Examples of activities that support and sustain
caregivers include: participation in caregiver support groups, assessment of
the home environment, linkage with needed community services, assistance with
self-care techniques, monitoring of individual’s daily activities, and
mental/social interventions. Additionally, AmeriCorps members engage in “volunteer
generation” activities to expand community capacity to meet respite needs.

Members will be recruited and trained as Enhanced Companions to provide assistance
to frail elders. Members provide respite care, including transportation, escort
service to medical appointments, assistance with housekeeping (linen changes,
laundry and dry cleaning), grocery shopping and meal preparation. All members
will be supervised by the professional Coordinator of the Enhanced Companion
Respite program and will also attend regular in-service trainings.

AmeriCorps Clearwater is a sponsored by the Clearwater Police Department. Members
assist with crime prevention and community policing efforts, to foster citizen
responsibility. They help build neighborhood and high school crime watches, build
neighborhood unity and provide educational opportunities, and conducts safety
patrols of area parks and trails. The majority of the members participate in
the Community Quick Response Team in order to support law enforcement personnel.

Students from Florida’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities
serve as AmeriCorps Mentors to K-12 students and college freshman at-risk of
academic failure. The AmeriCorps Mentors also coordinate community service projects
