DEADLINE FOR REQUESTS: MARCH 19, 2010 AT 5 P.M. EST

6 Days 6 Ramps is an opportunity to bring community members together during National AmeriCorps Week to help build wheelchair ramps for people with disabilities who have limited financial resources and cannot afford to have a ramp constructed. In many cases, individuals cannot be discharged from a nursing home unless there is a way for them to enter and exit their home using a wheelchair. Others who use a wheelchair for mobility become prisoners in their own homes and have limited access to the community.

Celebrating its seventh year as a signature community service project of Volunteer Florida, 6 Days 6 Ramps reaches out to persons with disabilities to join in the service project to learn about AmeriCorps and how the power of an individual can change lives forever.

Organizations statewide are strongly encouraged to partner with national service programs like AmeriCorps State or National Directs, AmeriCorps*VISTA, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America programs, as well as disability organizations and organizations that serve veterans with disabilities throughout Florida in submitting an application.

We also encourage applicants to partner with local businesses as a way of bringing together community resources to build wheelchair ramps throughout the year.

Applicants must ensure that ramp recipients are medically qualified to receive a ramp and meet Federal Poverty Guidelines.  Please see HHS Poverty and Income Guidelines for more information.

Projects need to take place on May 8-15, 2010, in conjunction with National AmeriCorps Week.  Volunteer Florida will develop and provide marketing materials, project website, and volunteer T-shirts to help promote the projects and to encourage the community to participate as volunteers.

Final awards will be based on the availability of funding and the quality of applications.
